Family Resources for Distance Learning
When will Bay View Academy be open for on-campus learning again?
At this time we do not know, we hope to be open again soont, but we are proactively planning for distance learning to occur for the remainder of this school year.
What should I expect for communication between BVA staff and students?
A week's worth of learning engagements will be posted on google classroom by Monday morning at 8:30 am. This will include PE, MAPA, Art, Spanish, Computer Coding and Social-Emotional learning
Math, Reading, Writing and thematic unit will have recorded mini-lessons for students to view on Google Classroom.
Teachers will be available to support students for 3-4 hours per day via Zoom or Google Classroom.
There will be times when the class or groups of students are asked to login for “live” instruction, check-ins and collaboration. But they will be recorded and posted on google classroom for any students who are unable to login at that time.
Teachers will be using a student planning template that breaks up engagements by day, but we will not be providing a daily schedule. The needs of every family are very different and we feel it is important to allow for significant flexibility in the timing of when students complete work.
What should I expect for communication between staff and parents?
Grade levels will continue to send out weekly Parent Square communications to families.
Classroom Teachers and Resource teachers will hold “office hours” 2x per week for at least an hour. During this time you will be available to communicate with teacchers via zoom to answer questions and provide guidance.
There will be weekly Zoom meetings for parents with the Head of School so families can ask questions, provide feedback and get updates on our planning.
The Community Support Counselors will also be scheduling weekly opportunities for families to engage and provide social-emotional support and guidance.
What will happen for students who rely on school meals?
For all areas in Monterey County, please refer to the Monterey County Office of Education nutrition during closure website: https://www.montereycoe.org/resources/alerts/coronavirus/nutrition/
My child has a disability. How is Bay View Academy going to support his/her needs?
Meeting the needs of all of our students is a priority during this uncertain time. To meet the needs of our students with disabilities, we have created the following plan:
Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Mental Health services will continue to be provided to our students on IEPs via Zoom Meeting.
Resource Teachers will have weekly available office hours for parents.
Resource Teachers will provide 1:1 support via Zoom or Google Classroom to work on IEP goals.
IEP Meetings will be held via Zoom and documents will be signed and returned via DocuSign
What is the role parents play with distance learning?
The transition to distance learning will be challenging for families. Parents will need to think differently about how to support their children; how to create structures and routines that allow their children to be successful; and how to monitor and support their children’s learning. Some students will thrive with distance learning, while others may struggle. This is a link to some guidelines that are intended to help parents think about what they can do to help their student find success in a distance learning environment. Distance Learning Plan
How much time should we be spending on distance learning?
Bay View Academy does not want its students staring at computer screens for 7-8 hours a day. We ask that families remember our staff are not experts in distance learning (YET!) and that it will require some trial-and-error before we find the right balance between online and offline learning experiences. BVA leadership and teachers will check in with families to assess what you’re seeing at home and what we need to adjust. We thank you in advance for your patience and partnership.
Will my child be given a laptop or another device?
Every student will need access to a laptop, tablet or computer. If you do not have one, please contact Cathy Gomes and we will coordinate providing one for you. In addition, if your family is in need of internet capabilities, Comcast is offering free internet service. They are providing needed equipment for free and once signed up Comcast will come do the installation or you will be sent a DIY kit. The first 60 days of this program has the fee waived due to COVID-19. To sign up, go to: https://internetessentials.com/
My child is worried and/or scared, what can I do to help them?
It is imperative for parents to help their children manage the worry, anxiety, and range of emotions they may experience because of Coronavirus and the school closure. Difficult though it may be, do your best not to transfer your stress or worry to your children. They will be out of sorts, whether they admit it or not, and need as much normal routine as parents can provide. Both of our Community Support Counselors are available to support your child through this uncertain time. They can be reached here:

5-8 Mr. Casique

A Frequently Asked Questions section and a “Distance Learning Resources for Families” tab have been added to the website and will continue to be updated frequently.
Community announcements and updates will be posted on facebook
How does this affect state testing?
Due to school closures, the Federal Government and the State of California have suspended all state testing for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
If I or my child gets sick are they responsible for completing the online work?
If anyone in your household becomes sick, we expect that your attention will be focused on meeting their needs. In some cases, school work for children can be a distraction from worry. Please take the time your family needs to stay healthy.
